August Birthstone: Peridot & Spinel

August has two birthstones: Peridot (a vivid yellow-green olivine mineral) and Spinel (available in a dazzling range of colors). Associated with Leo and Virgo, peridot is one of the few gemstones that comes in only one color — green — caused by iron. Spinel was only recognized as a separate species from ruby and sapphire in the 19th century; many famous "rubies" in crown jewels are actually spinels.
