History & Mythology

Howlite was first discovered in 1868 in Nova Scotia, Canada, by Canadian chemist, geologist, and mineralogist Henry How, for whom the stone was named. How initially found the mineral in gypsum quarries, where it formed as nodular masses within sedimentary deposits. The indigenous Mi'kmaq people of the region had known of similar white stones for generations, using them in ceremonial practices and believing they carried the peaceful energy of winter snow.

Throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries, howlite gained popularity as a carving material due to its relatively soft nature and striking appearance. Artisans began fashioning it into decorative objects, beads, and small sculptures. The stone's porous nature made it particularly suitable for dyeing, leading to its frequent use as an imitation for more expensive stones like turquoise. In metaphysical traditions that emerged during the New Age movement of the 1960s and 70s, howlite became associated with patience, wisdom, and emotional healing, earning it the nickname 'the stone of awareness.'

Care & Maintenance

Due to its relatively soft nature at 3.5 on the Mohs scale, howlite requires gentle care to maintain its pristine appearance. Clean your howlite using lukewarm water and mild soap, gently scrubbing with a soft toothbrush to remove dirt from the natural crevices. Avoid harsh chemicals, ultrasonic cleaners, and steam cleaning, as these can damage the stone's delicate structure. Store howlite separately from harder gemstones to prevent scratching, preferably wrapped in soft cloth or placed in individual compartments. Keep howlite away from prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, as this may cause the white color to yellow over time. The stone's porous nature means it can absorb oils and cosmetics, so handle with clean hands and avoid contact with lotions or perfumes.

Who Should Wear Howlite?

Howlite particularly resonates with Gemini, Virgo, and Scorpio individuals, complementing their natural tendencies toward analysis and transformation with enhanced patience and emotional clarity. Those in high-stress professions such as healthcare workers, teachers, counselors, and executives often benefit from howlite's calming influence. The stone is especially valuable for anyone struggling with insomnia, anxiety, or anger management issues, as its gentle energy promotes restful sleep and emotional regulation. Students and researchers appreciate howlite for its alleged ability to enhance memory retention and clear thinking. Highly sensitive individuals or empaths may find howlite helpful in creating energetic boundaries and maintaining inner peace. Parents dealing with challenging family dynamics or caregivers in demanding situations often turn to howlite for its reputation in fostering patience and understanding.
