Sugilite is a rare cyclosilicate mineral first identified in 1944 by Japanese petrologist Ken-ichi Sugi. The most significant gem-quality deposits were found in the Kalahari Manganese Fields of South Africa in 1979. Its vivid purple to magenta color comes from manganese.
