Synastry compares two birth charts by analyzing aspects between one person's planets and the other's. It reveals the dynamic energies, attractions, challenges, and growth opportunities in any relationship.
Deluxe Astrology's synastry calculator overlays two complete birth charts, computing planet-to-planet aspects with orb precision and scoring relationship dynamics across chemistry, communication, commitment, and long-term growth. About our calculations →
Synastry is the art of relationship astrology. It works by overlaying two natal charts and examining the angular relationships — called aspects — between one person's planets and the other's. A conjunction between your Venus and their Mars? That's raw chemistry. Your Saturn squaring their Moon? Expect growing pains around emotional vulnerability. These aren't metaphors. Experienced astrologers have tracked these patterns across thousands of couples, and the correlations hold.
What makes synastry more useful than generic Sun sign compatibility is precision. It reads the full chart — Moon placements that shape emotional needs, Mercury contacts that determine whether you actually communicate well, Jupiter aspects that reveal where you expand each other's world. The nodes of the Moon show karmic dimensions. Chiron aspects expose old wounds that surface specifically through this relationship. A high-scoring synastry chart doesn't guarantee a smooth ride. But it does reveal what kind of ride you're on.
Conjunctions (0°) fuse two planets' energies — intensifying whatever they touch. Sun-Moon conjunctions create instinctive understanding. Venus-Mars conjunctions generate magnetic physical attraction. Trines (120°) and sextiles (60°) create natural ease and flow. Squares (90°) and oppositions (180°) generate tension — but also chemistry and growth.
Pay special attention to contacts involving the Moon (emotional security), Venus (love style), Mars (desire and drive), and Saturn (commitment and longevity). A relationship with strong Saturn contacts may feel heavy but often outlasts one built on Venus-Mars heat alone.
