Your Ascendant (Lagna) is the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at the moment of your birth. It shapes your appearance, personality, and how the world perceives you.
Your rising sign — also called your ascendant — is the zodiac sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the exact moment you were born. It forms the first house cusp of your birth chart and acts as the lens through which every other planet in your chart expresses itself. Because the ascendant shifts to a new sign roughly every two hours, your exact birth time is essential. A difference of just 30 minutes can put you in a completely different rising sign — and that changes every house cusp in your chart.
Your three core chart points work together but describe different layers of you. Your Sun sign is your core identity — the conscious self you build over a lifetime. Your Moon sign is your emotional inner world — what you need to feel safe, how you process feelings privately. Your rising sign is the mask you show the world: your first impressions, your physical appearance tendencies, the energy you walk into a room with before you say a single word. Strangers read your ascendant before they ever experience your Sun or Moon.
Here is a quick reference for how each rising sign comes across to others:
| Rising Sign | Ruled by | First Impression |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | Mars | Bold, direct, energetic |
| Taurus | Venus | Calm, grounded, reliable |
| Gemini | Mercury | Witty, curious, quick |
| Cancer | Moon | Warm, caring, guarded |
| Leo | Sun | Confident, magnetic, generous |
| Virgo | Mercury | Precise, helpful, observant |
| Libra | Venus | Poised, charming, diplomatic |
| Scorpio | Mars / Pluto | Intense, perceptive, private |
| Sagittarius | Jupiter | Upbeat, candid, expansive |
| Capricorn | Saturn | Composed, ambitious, serious |
| Aquarius | Saturn / Uranus | Detached, original, friendly |
| Pisces | Jupiter / Neptune | Dreamy, empathetic, fluid |
Your Vedic (sidereal) ascendant and your Western (tropical) ascendant are often different. The gap is roughly 23 degrees — called the ayanamsha — because Vedic astrology anchors the zodiac to the fixed stars while Western astrology anchors it to the seasons. This means your Western rising sign and your Vedic rising sign may sit one sign apart. Deluxe Astrology calculates both so you can compare how each tradition describes your outer persona.
To find your rising sign you need three things: your date of birth, your time of birth, and your place of birth. If you do not know your exact birth time, check your birth certificate or ask a family member about hospital records. Some people use sunrise as a default — it gives you roughly 0 degrees of the Sun sign as your ascendant — but it is only a rough estimate. A rectification session with an astrologer can narrow your birth time down using major life events if records are truly unavailable.
