Shakata Yoga
Shakat Yoga forms when Jupiter occupies the 6th, 8th, or 12th house from the Moon in the birth chart. The name literally means "cart" -- evoking the image of a wooden cart that alternately rises and falls as it travels over rough ground. This yoga creates a pattern of fluctuating fortune: gains followed by losses, success followed by setbacks, and emotional highs followed by periods of doubt. Jupiter is the planet of expansion, fortune, and wisdom, while the Moon governs emotions, the mind, and public life. When Jupiter is in a dusthana (difficult house) from the Moon, the native cannot fully access Jupiter's protective and expansive qualities at the emotional level. Good fortune arrives but does not feel stable. Opportunities appear but are accompanied by complications. The yoga does not prevent success but makes the journey to it feel like a rollercoaster. The yoga remedy focuses on stabilizing the connection between wisdom (Jupiter/Ajna) and emotions (Moon/Svadhisthana) through grounding practices.
Count the houses from the Moon to Jupiter in your Vedic chart. If Jupiter is in the 6th, 8th, or 12th house from the Moon, Shakat Yoga is present. The yoga is cancelled (Shakat Bhanga) if Jupiter is in a Kendra (1, 4, 7, 10) from the Lagna, which significantly reduces its negative effects. Also check Jupiter's overall strength in the chart.
Shakat Yoga creates an unstable connection between the Ajna (third eye) and Svadhisthana (sacral) chakras, producing a disconnect between wisdom and emotional experience. Physically, this manifests as fluctuating energy levels that do not follow predictable patterns, digestive irregularity (especially bloating and liver sluggishness, as Jupiter governs the liver), and a tendency toward weight fluctuation. The emotional body experiences a rollercoaster quality: optimism crashes into pessimism without proportional external cause. The Ajna chakra may alternate between crystal clarity and complete fog. The Svadhisthana chakra swings between creative abundance and emotional numbness. Sleep patterns may be inconsistent, with periods of deep rest followed by stretches of insomnia. The yoga practice stabilizes both chakras through consistent, rhythmic practice that teaches the body to maintain equilibrium regardless of external fortune.
6 poses targeting the Ajna and Svadhisthana chakras.
Vrksasana
Stand on one foot, place the opposite foot on the inner thigh. Find a fixed point for your gaze (drishti). Arms can be at heart centre or extended overhead. Root down through the standing foot.
Cultivates balance and stability, directly counteracting the fluctuating quality of Shakat Yoga. The tree sways but does not fall.
Trikonasana
Wide stance, front foot forward, back foot at 90 degrees. Extend arms parallel to the floor. Hinge at the front hip, lower the front hand to the shin, ankle, or floor. Top arm reaches to the sky.
Creates geometric stability in the body. The triangle is the strongest structural shape, countering Shakat's instability.
Ardha Chandrasana
From triangle, bend the front knee and shift weight forward. Place the front hand on the floor or a block. Lift the back leg parallel to the floor. Open the chest and extend the top arm.
Combines balance with lunar energy, stabilizing the Moon (emotions) while maintaining expansive posture (Jupiter).
Setu Bandhasana with block
Lie on your back, feet flat, knees bent. Lift hips and place a yoga block under the sacrum at a comfortable height. Let the weight settle onto the block. Arms rest at sides, palms up.
The supported position provides the stability that Shakat Yoga denies. The passive hip opening rebalances the Svadhisthana chakra.
Viparita Karani
Sit sideways against a wall, then swing legs up. Hips as close to the wall as comfortable. Arms in cactus shape or resting at sides.
Reverses the rollercoaster energy pattern by inverting the body into a calm, supported position. Deeply restorative for fluctuating energy.
Shavasana
Lie flat on the back. Before closing the eyes, set the intention: I am stable regardless of what comes or goes. Scan the body from head to toe, releasing tension. Let the ground hold your full weight.
Integrates the stabilizing work of the entire sequence. Teaches the nervous system that equilibrium is the natural resting state.
Sama Vritti Pranayama
Timing: 5 minutes, 20 breath cycles
Sit with the spine tall. Inhale through the nose for 4 counts. Exhale through the nose for 4 counts. The key is perfect equality between inhale and exhale, creating a metronome-like rhythm. Gradually increase to 5:5, then 6:6 over several weeks. Sama Vritti directly programs the nervous system for balance and stability, countering Shakat Yoga's fluctuating pattern.
ओम् ग्रां ग्रीं ग्रौं सः गुरवे नमः
Om Graam Greem Graum Sah Gurave Namah
Salutations to Jupiter, the great teacher. Strengthening Jupiter helps stabilize the fortune fluctuations by improving the connection between wisdom and emotional response.
Sit with eyes closed. Visualize a candle flame burning in the centre of your chest. Outside the flame, winds blow from all directions -- these represent the ups and downs of fortune. The flame flickers but does not go out. With each breath, the flame grows steadier and brighter. It develops a calm, blue-white core that is unmoved by the winds. This core is your inner equilibrium. The winds continue, but they no longer threaten the flame. You are the flame, not the wind. Fortune may rise and fall, but your inner steadiness remains constant.
