Zero is the anglicized form of the French zéro, which comes from the popular Venetian zeevero or the Italian zefiro that derives from the term zephyrum used by the prominent Italian mathematician Fibonacci. It came to mean ’empty’ when “ṣifr,” a term from the pre-Islamic time, evolved into zero during the use of the former in translating the Indian word “śūnya.” The first known English adaptation of the term zero found its mention in 1598. Zero may have also been derived from the Greek name Xeros meaning ‘bare’ or ‘dry.’
