Choosing Your Baby's Name by Nakshatra
By Deluxe Astrology Team
One of the most beautiful traditions in Vedic culture is choosing a baby's name based on the nakshatra, or lunar mansion, active at the time of their birth. This practice, known as "Namakarana," is rooted in the belief that certain sounds carry specific vibrations that align with the cosmic energies present at the moment a soul enters the world. By naming a child with the syllable prescribed by their birth nakshatra, parents create a harmonious resonance between the child and the universe.
The zodiac in Vedic astrology is divided into 27 nakshatras, each spanning 13 degrees and 20 minutes of the ecliptic. Each nakshatra is further divided into four quarters, called padas, and each pada is assigned specific starting syllables. When a baby is born, the position of the Moon determines which nakshatra and pada are active, which in turn reveals the recommended starting sound for the child's name.
Ashwini nakshatra, the first lunar mansion ruled by Ketu, carries the syllables Chu, Che, Cho, and La. Bharani, ruled by Venus, offers the sounds Li, Lu, Le, and Lo. Krittika, ruled by the Sun, gives A, Ee, U, and Ea. Rohini, one of the most auspicious nakshatras ruled by the Moon, provides O, Va, Vi, and Vu. Mrigashira, ruled by Mars, offers Ve, Vo, Ka, and Ki.
Ardra nakshatra, governed by Rahu, carries Ku, Gha, Ng, and Chh. Punarvasu, ruled by Jupiter, gives Ke, Ko, Ha, and Hi. Pushya, considered extremely auspicious and ruled by Saturn, offers Hu, He, Ho, and Da. Ashlesha, ruled by Mercury, provides Di, Du, De, and Do.
Magha nakshatra, ruled by Ketu, carries Ma, Mi, Mu, and Me. Purva Phalguni, ruled by Venus, gives Mo, Ta, Ti, and Tu. Uttara Phalguni, ruled by the Sun, offers Te, To, Pa, and Pi. Hasta, ruled by the Moon, provides Pu, Sha, Na, and Tha.
